Hearing aids are small devices designed to help those experiencing hearing loss. They work by amplifying external sounds for mild to severe hearing loss. With there being new technological advancements, there are several versions of hearing aids on the market today. For those with mild to moderate hearing loss, an in the ear (ITE) is the most common device to aid hearing.

What is an ITE Hearing Aid?

ITE hearing aids stand for in the ear, which describes their positioning. These hearing aids are designed to be worn within the ear bowl. They are sometimes known as full shell hearing aids, but in most cases they are referred to as ITEs.

They can fit all sized ears as they are custom designed by audiologists for maximum comfort. The entire technical features of the hearing aid sit within the one casing. When sat in the ear bowl and switched on, they can pick up external noises to aid hearing.

How Do ITE Hearing Aids Work?

ITE hearing aids are incredible devices. They are small yet packed with powerful technology. Inside the device is a battery, amplifier circuit, and small microphone. Together, these features pick up sound and turn them into electronic currents. The amplified electric current drives the sounds through a loudspeaker, which is positioned towards the ear canal to help you hear.

On all ITE devices, there will be volume controls so that the wearer can turn the volume up and down for certain situations. These are wireless devices and do not need any extra equipment. However, if you wish to connect them to your phone to utilize the controls from there, you can. Many advanced versions can connect with mobile phones.

Who Are ITE’s For?

They are ideal for anyone experiencing mild to moderate hearing loss. Although some people may prefer smaller, more discreet, and more powerful devices, ITE’s are great for those with larger ear bowls and visual impairment. They are easier to take in and out and can fit in any size and shape ear bowl.

ITEs also have very simple controls, making them easy to use. They are comfortable, easy to clean and easy to use with telephones. Unlike BTEs, which sit outside of the ear, ITEs are more discreet and convenient for those who want to continue using their telephones.

A few disadvantages of ITE hearing aids are that they are more susceptible to picking up wind noise and not being as powerful as newer devices, which sit within the ear canal.

However, ITE hearing aids are ideal devices for those looking for all-day comfort and discretion whilst reaping the sound amplifying benefits.
